Top 10 Places To Visit In Tasmania

Planning a trip to Tasmania? From Hobart to the Tamar Valley, Tasmania is jam packed with things to see and do. Here’s our Top 10 places to visit on your Tassie adventure.

Wineglass Bay

Part of the Freycinet National Park, Wineglass Bay is the jewel in Tasmania’s very shiny crown. Featuring a pristine coastline at the bottom of pink granite mountains, Wineglass Bay is considered one of the top 10 beaches in the world. Situated on the east coast of the island, Wineglass Bay is a leisurely 2.5hour drive north from Hobart, with plenty of spectacular landscape to see along the way.

Cradle Mountain

Located in a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Cradle Mountain is a trailwalkers paradise. Covered in snow during winter and spotted with wildflowers during Spring, a visit to Cradle Mountain is well worth a visit at any time of the year. Keep an eye out for Tasmanian Devils and Wombats.

MONA

One of the most talked about galleries in Australia, MONA is both fascinating and polarising. Housing a large collection of controversial artworks, a visit to MONA is guaranteed to leave an impression. A “must do” for Hobart, MONA is conveniently located near the Hobart waterfront and the gallery is open year round and also hosts 2 major art festivals MOFO Festival (in summer) and Dark MOFO (in winter) for art enthusiasts.

Hobart Waterfront

The Hobart waterfront precinct is one of the oldest in Australia, made up of docklands and old warehouses harking back to the first settlers. Today the area is a vibrant entertainment scene with the old buildings converted to restaurants, bars, galleries, and hotels. Stay in a converted warehouse and place yourself in the heart of Hobart.

Salamanca Markets

Every Saturday the streets of Salamanca Place transform to the one of the largest outdoor markets in Australia. Browse over 300 stalls packed with locally crafted products, seasonal produce and artwork.

Lavender Fields

Similar to the Lavender fields of Province in France, Tasmania has a spectacular Lavender season when you can walk amongst seemingly endless fields of the fragrant purple flower. Blooming from December to January, the Port Arthur Lavender Farm and the Bridstowe Lavender Estate have the largest lavender fields in the state and are your best chance for getting that perfect instagram photo.

Bruny Island

Accessible by ferry, Bruny island is located off the south eastern coast of Tasmania and is packed with stunning scenery, abundant wildlife and plenty of local produce to sample. Bruny island is home to wild berries, handmade cheese, fresh oysters, manuka honey, and whisky distilleries, meaning there is plenty to enjoy while on the island. The Cape Bruny Lighthouse is also a highlight both for the views and the history, being built by convicts in 1836.

Bay Of Fires

Bay of Fires in Tasmania’s north east boasts over 50kms of pristine coastline. A spot to sit back and take in the scenery, the bay is famous for orange granite boulders, white sand and turquoise waters with the beaches interspersed by rocky outcrops and lagoons.

Port Arthur Historic Site

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Port Arthur is a must see for historical value and its spectacular location. Consisting of the remnants of 30 historic buildings from the 18th century, Port Arthur sits atop rocky cliffs along the Tasman Sea. Take a tour of the convict prison, visit the lavender farms and have a quiet moment in the serene gardens.

Tamar Valley Wine Region

Tasmania’s Tamar Valley centres around a 65km stretch of the Tamar River from Launceston to Bass Strait. Spotted with vineyards, orchards, lavender fields, and dairy farms, taking a turn off the highway and exploring the smaller lightly trafficked roads is highly recommended. Named in the Worlds Top 10 Wine routes, Tamar Valley boasts 32 wineries. Book a car with a driver or explore at your own pace, sample the local produce, pick a winery and enjoy lunch with a view.
